Chana Gosht

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu!

This recipe is for Chana Gosht. It is a curry made with lamb and split chickpea lentils. This is my mothers' recipe and she made it using a pressure cooker, but it can also be made in a normal saucepan. It's great served with roti or rice, for a yummy weeknight curry.
I would also like to remind you of my other blog - British Muslim Girl. Here, you will find Islamic inspiration and reminders - inshallah, you will find them useful!

A Simple List of Ingredients:

1. Split Chickpea Lentils
2. Leg of Lamb Pieces
3. Onions
4. Garlic
5. Salt
6. Crushed Red Chilli
7. Ground Turmeric
8. Water
9. Ginger
10. Vegetable Oil
11. Garam Masala

Bismillah, let's begin!

First, take 1 cup chana dhal (split chickpea lentils) and soak them overnight or for a few hours.

Take a large saucepan or pressure cooker and place 1 and 1/2 pound leg of lamb pieces into it.

Add a peeled and roughly chopped onion ...

.. 9 peeled garlic cloves ..

.. 1 teaspoon salt ..

.. 2 teaspoon crushed red chilli ..

.. 1/2 tsp ground turmeric (haldi) ..

.. and 1 cup water.

Place the lid on the pressure cooker with the weight. Wait for it to whistle, and then turn the heat right down and, cook for 1/2 an hour.

If you are cooking this in a normal pan, bring the mixture to the boil and then simmer for 1 hour.

Next, add 1 inch piece crushed ginger.

Add 4 tablespoons vegetable oil.

Bring to the boil ..

.. and place on medium heat until the curry dries out.

Drain the lentils, and add them.

Add 4 cups water.

Bring to the boil, and add 1 teaspoon garam masala.

Simmer for 15 minutes until the lentils are tender.

Serve with rice or bread for a yummy dinner.
